The podcast

The Writer’s Mindset (which is part of The Writer’s Cookbook family) is hosted by Kristina Adams and Ellie Betts.

Kristina and Ellie conduct interviews sometimes together and sometimes individually, depending on the topic and guest. Ellie records most of the intros and outros separately so that Kristina can save her spoons for our patron-exclusive bonus series, HEALTHY HABITS.

We edit The Writer’s Mindset in Descript, with Kristina primarily editing the audio and video side of things, while Ellie does the transcript and subtitles.

About Kristina

Kristina Adams is the author of 16 novels, 3 books for writers, and too many blog posts to count. She’s co-host and of The Writer’s Mindset and publishes mother/daughter ghost stories as K.C.Adams. When she’s not writing, she’s playing with her dog, inflicting cooking experiments on her boyfriend, or attempting to keep the contents of her greenhouse alive.

About Ellie

Ellie Betts is a writer, normally found either working on her latest project, studying writing, or co-hosting The Writer’s Mindset podcast, and typically with a coffee in her hand. Her giant cat, Frankie, is her biggest distraction and favourite snuggly writing buddy.

Audience

Our audience consists of indie authors at the start of their careers. Either they’ve published a couple of books, or they’re unpublished. They’re facing barriers to achieving their goals and they may or may not know what they are. These barriers include fear of judgment, fear of doing something new, lack of support from the people around them.

Audio or video?

While our main focus is audio, we also publish video versions of our interviews over on YouTube. (Link at the bottom of the page.) For most episodes, less than 10% of our audience joins us on YouTube.

Making you fabulous

To ensure your amazing knowledge comes across crystal clear, please:

Sit somewhere quiet (ideally with soft furnishings)

The sound will bounce around rooms with lots of soft furnishings much better, which leads to a cleaner sound. It also helps if there’s a wall/something soft in front of you.

Blinds/curtains are closed

For the same reason as above.

Close windows and doors

This helps prevent your voice from echoing and ensures there’s less background noise. Sometimes microphones pick up stuff we don’t hear when recording, but that is impossible to edit out in post-production.

Wear headphones

So that your microphone doesn’t pick up Kristina talking!

If you’re using a lapel or other mic attached to you (like earphones)…

Tie back long hair to keep it away from the mic! It’s crazy the noise this can make. And it’s noise we can’t remove in editing 🙁

Remove any clunky/jangly jewellery

Jewellery can look amazing on camera, but it can also cause unnecessary background noise if it’s big or jangly.

Ensure you won’t be disturbed

Close the door, put a sign up, stick your phone on Do Not Disturb, tell everyone in your house.

Pets are welcome to make cameos if they don’t also cause background noise (like the time Ellie’s cat, Frankie, used the litter box when we were recording, or when Kristina’s dog, Millie, slurped peanut butter out of her Kong)…

Drink plenty beforehand

Dry mouth clicks are a strange noise, and not a very nice one to listen to!

Editing

This podcast is edited before release. We’ll edit out pauses, some breathing noises, and as much talking-over-each-other as possible (but sometimes this isn’t possible).

However, it’s almost impossible to edit out background noises, which is why we ask you to sit somewhere quiet and be mindful of hair, jewellery, and location.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to email Kristina at thewriter@writerscookbook.com.
